LNG Carriers and DF Engines

✓Practical maritime training ✓Lifetime access ✓Learn onboard or ashore

About this course

LNG (liquefied natural gas) is increasingly used as a primary fuel for marine engines.

New vessels are being designed for gas operation and existing vessels are being converted. The IMO 2020 limits on SOx emissions have been one of the drivers behind this development.

The “LNG Carriers and DF Engines” course explains the general principles and operational features faced by crews working with dual-fuel engines and LNG systems.

Dual-fuel engines are now among the most common propulsion solutions on LNG-powered vessels and LNG carriers.

LNG carriers are a separate and important subject, and one full part of the course is dedicated to their design and operation.

Course 1

  • Operation of four-stroke main engines on methane; detailed design and operational features of MAN 51/60DF and Wärtsilä 50DF engines
  • Organization and execution of LNG bunkering onboard
  • Physical and chemical properties of LNG

Course 2

  • Methane ignition technology in marine diesel engines
  • Principles of receiving and storing LNG onboard
  • The importance of nitrogen on vessels where methane is used as the primary fuel

Course 3

  • Design features of LNG carriers
  • Principles of receiving and storing LNG cargo onboard
  • Methods of controlling LNG pressure
  • Nitrogen production and its main areas of use onboard vessels where methane is the primary fuel

Course 4

This part examines technical problems that may arise during operation of dual-fuel engines.
- High exhaust-gas temperature: possible causes and consequences
- Low temperature in one cylinder together with increased SOGAV opening time
- Surging: possible causes and consequences
- Failure of an exhaust-manifold rupture disc
- Waste Gate Valve failures and calibration of the I/P converter that controls air pressure to the pneumatic actuator
The course also includes information about deck equipment on modern LNG carriers and shows the LNG cargo receiving process using real onboard footage.
This course is a practical continuation of the AtSea material on the work of marine engineers aboard gas carriers.

The course is designed for:

  • Experienced marine engineers
  • Junior engineers who want to develop professionally
  • Maritime students who want to build a career in LNG shipping and on gas carriers

Working with LNG is an important part of the future of shipping.

LNG carrier employment remains one of the specialist segments of the maritime market.
