About this course
The Oily Water Separator & Oil Record Book Part 1 course provides a detailed study of the design, operation and maintenance of Oily Water Separators (OWS). The operating principles of modern bilge-water filtration equipment are explained together with the complete system arrangement and the individual components involved in each filtration stage before bilge water is discharged overboard. Particular attention is paid to the operation and maintenance of 15 ppm / 5 ppm OMD (Oil Monitoring Device) equipment used to monitor the oil content after treatment.
The course is suitable both for junior marine engineers and for experienced engineers who want to close knowledge gaps related to OWS operation.
In this part we continue the OWS topic and focus on practical issues encountered during operation of modern bilge-water treatment systems. Real inspection scenarios involving PSC, Flag State and Vetting are discussed, together with the points that engineers should monitor during operation and maintenance in order to keep the equipment technically ready for any inspection.
DESCRIPTION OF THE 3 courseThis part is dedicated to the principles, requirements and practical rules for completing the Oil Record Book Part I (ORB — Machinery Space Operations).
The Oily Water Separator is MARPOL-regulated equipment, so all relevant records are strictly standardized by IMO requirements and MEPC guidance, including MEPC.1/Circ.736/Rev.2. Everyday operations involving transfer, evaporation, incineration or disposal of sludge and bilge water to shore reception facilities, barges or road tankers are reviewed with the correct codes and item numbers used in the ORB.
Marine engineers must clearly understand the rules and practical details of Oil Record Book entries. The Oily Water Separator & ORB course package is designed for watchkeeping engineers, Second Engineers and Chief Engineers who want a confident working knowledge of OWS and ORB requirements.
In the final part we consolidate the main design, operation and maintenance principles of the Oily Water Separator. We examine how to read OMD memory graphs that may be requested by inspectors during onboard checks. The course also continues with Oil Record Book requirements, including the conditions for bilge-water discharge inside and outside Special Areas, and discusses practical details related to OWS capacity and corresponding ORB entries.
